The trip at a glance

About this trip

Uttarakhand is a state that packs in everything—mountains, rivers, spiritual towns, and alpine meadows—and this Auli Chopta Rishikesh backpacking trip is designed to give you a slice of all of it. Starting from Rishikesh, the gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas, the route takes you deep into the heart of Uttarakhand. Auli, known as India’s ski capital, offers panoramic views of Nanda Devi and Nar Parvat, while Chopta, often called the “Mini Switzerland” of India, is all about peaceful meadows and high-altitude hikes. Rishikesh, on the other hand, brings in the energy with river rafting, Ganga Aarti, and iconic bridges like Ram Jhula and Janki Setu. This trip starts and ends in Rishikesh, making it easy to access by road or rail from Delhi and other major cities. Whether you're looking for snow, trails, or spiritual vibes, this route covers it all. Doing Auli, Chopta, and Rishikesh together makes sense—not just geographically, but experientially. The Rishikesh to Auli drive takes you along the Alaknanda River and past the sacred Prayags — Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Nandaprayag. From Auli, the Chopta to Auli distance is short and scenic, with alpine roads leading to meadows and forests. Chopta is the base for the Tungnath and Chandrashila trek, where you’ll hike to the highest Shiva temple in the world and get 360º Himalayan views. On the way back, a short hike to Deoria Tal offers mirror-like reflections of snow peaks. Ending the trip in Rishikesh brings it full circle—with a thrilling rafting session and sunset Ganga Aarti to wrap things up. This Auli Chopta backpacking trip is ideal for travelers who want a balanced mix of adventure, nature, and culture in one go.
