Our Buran Ghati trek package ensures a seamless and unforgettable trekking experience. Your adventure begins with a drive from Shimla to Janglik, followed by a trek to Dayara Thach. As you ascend, the landscape transforms, offering panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks and lush valleys. The trek continues through charming villages, serene meadows, and dense pine forests, providing ample opportunities to immerse yourself in nature's beauty. The Buran Ghati trek also presents trekkers with the enchanting beauty of Chandranahan Lake and the stunning Gunas Waterfall. Chandranahan Lake, a sacred glacial lake, is nestled in a high-altitude basin surrounded by towering peaks, offering a serene and mystical ambiance. The crystal-clear waters of the lake reflect the surrounding snow-capped mountains, creating a mesmerizing sight. The journey to the lake is dotted with vibrant alpine flora, making it a nature lover's paradise. Gunas Waterfall, another highlight of the Chandranahan Lake trek, cascading down the waterfall, set amidst dense forests and rocky outcrops, provides a refreshing and tranquil spot for trekkers to rest and soak in the natural beauty. These scenic spots add to the allure of the Buran Ghati trek, offering moments of peace and wonder amid the challenging journey. History Behind the Buran Ghati Trek Historically, Buran Ghati has been a route for shepherds and traders navigating through the rugged terrain of the Himalayas. It connected the Pabbar Valley with the Baspa Valley in Kinnaur. Shepherds, traders, and villagers used this “secret pass” to move wool, salt, herbs, and livestock across regions. Mythology says a sage named it “Buran,” meaning Gateway of Winds. Villages like Janglik and Barua worship their gram devtas, believing these mountains are divinely protected. During the Bushahr State era and even British times, this pass held strategic value. Today, walking this trail feels like stepping into a living Himalayan chronicle shaped by faith, trade, and survival. Distance of the Buran Ghati Trek The Buran Ghati Trek covers approximately ~37 km and takes ~7 days to complete. While the distance may not seem extreme, the terrain and altitude make every kilometre meaningful. Maximum Altitude: 15,000 ft Duration: 6 Nights / 7 Days Trail Length: ~37 km Each day unfolds differently, with short forest walks, long meadow crossings, steep ascents, and technical descents. The real challenge lies in altitude gain and the pass crossing, not just the kilometres. As a trekker, you’ll feel time slow down, measured in footsteps, breaths, and moments of awe. How Difficult Is the Buran Ghati Trek? Buran Ghati is rated moderate to difficult, and it truly earns that title. The trail involves steep ascents, long trekking hours, and a dramatic descent down a snow wall using ropes. Rapid altitude gain can trigger AMS, making acclimatization crucial. Key Challenges & Why It’s Demanding: Rapid Altitude Gain: The trek begins at a high elevation and climbs swiftly to 15,000 ft, increasing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and making proper acclimatization essential. Technical Pass Crossing: Summit day features steep climbs followed by a dramatic descent down a near-vertical snow or ice wall, requiring rappelling with ropes, harnesses, and expert guidance. Ever-Changing Terrain: Trekkers move through thick forests, open alpine meadows, rocky boulder zones, and snow-covered slopes, each demanding a different rhythm, balance, and skill. High Fitness Requirement: The trek calls for excellent stamina, strong legs, and solid cardiovascular fitness, ideally the ability to jog 5 km in 30–35 minutes with ease. It’s ideal for trekkers with prior Himalayan experience. Fit beginners can attempt it with serious training. The difficulty is real, but so is the reward. Best Time to Do the Buran Ghati Trek Buran Ghati shines in May–June and September–October, each season offering a unique flavor. May–June: Snowfields, rappelling, and thrilling snow slides. Early-morning summit under stars. A mix of white snow and blooming meadows. September–October: Snow-free pass. Lush post-monsoon grasslands. Vibrant autumn colors and clear skies. In summer, it’s an adventure playground. In autumn, it’s a painter’s canvas. Both seasons deliver magic, choose based on whether you crave snow adrenaline or colourful serenity. Highlights of the Buran Ghati Trek Diverse Terrain: The Buran Ghati Trek features many different landscapes. It starts in thick forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. Then, the trail leads to broad alpine meadows like Dayara Thatch, glacial lakes, and snowfields, finishing at high mountain passes. Each day brings new views and physical challenges. Stunning Views: The trek provides amazing views of the Dhauladhar and Kinnaur ranges. Campsites like Dhunda, Janglik, and Litham are beautiful during sunrise and sunset, as the snowy peaks glow in shades of gold and pink. Janglik is especially notable for its traditional Kath Kuni wooden houses, the sacred Jakh Devta temple, and the peaceful culture of Himachal, all set in the Pabbar Valley. On the Barua side, the trail opens to wide valleys, making it a perfect spot for photography. Adventure Elements: Buran Ghati gives you a true Himalayan adventure. You will cross streams, walk on glacial terrain, gain altitude quickly, and experience summer snow. These challenges, along with the stunning mountain views, make the trek both tough and exciting. Chandranahan Lake: At 4,200 m, Chandranahan Lake is a sacred group of snow-fed ponds. You reach it by hiking from Litham over rocky and sometimes snowy ground. Its striking location among snowy ridges feels isolated and magical, and locals respect it for its spiritual importance. Buran Ghati Pass: Buran Ghati Pass, at 4,572 m, is the highest point of the trek and offers the best thrill. The climb is steep and often covered in snow, but the real excitement is in the descent. This part requires technical rope support and sometimes ice axes. Sliding down with expert help gives you a genuine expedition experience. With our experienced guides and well-planned itineraries, the Buran Ghati trek is perfect for both seasoned trekkers and adventurous beginners.
